The NMR LipoProfile®
The NMR LipoProfile® is an advanced cholesterol test using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. This is one of the most accurate ways to measure cardio-metabolic risk. The results can be used alongside other lipid measurements and clinical evaluation to aid in the management of lipoprotein disorders associated with the development of cardiovascular disease and diabetes.
The NMR LipoProfile enables a more advanced assessment of blood lipids above the standard HDL and LDL cholesterol measurements, giving clarity to practitioners of their patient's cardio-metabolic risk.
This advanced test measures both low-density-lipoproteins (LDL) and high-density-lipoproteins (HDL) particles, which transport cholesterol in the blood. LDL particles increase the risk of plaque formation and oxidation; therefore, the higher number of LDL-P and small LDL-P, the greater risk for cardiovascular disease (CVD).
A higher number of HDL-P lowers the risk of CVD since HDL removes LDL via transportation to the liver. HDL-P is more strongly related to atherosclerosis and CVD risk than HDL-C.
As well as particle number, particle size is an important biomarker to assess a person's cardiovascular and cardio-metabolic risk. Small, dense LDL particles are more likely to contribute to plaque formation in the aterial wall where they can oxidise and increase inflammation; whereas larger, 'fluffy' LDL particles are less likely to form plaque on the arterial wall.
Small, dense LDL particles are also associated with insulin resistance and type II diabetes risk. This profile includes an LP-IR measurement, which is an index calculated from six lipoprotein markers (small LDL-P, LDL size, large HDL-P, HDL size, large VLDL-P, VLDL size). An individual's likelihood of developing diabetes increases as the LP-IR score increases.
Thus, small LDL particle size, low-levels of large HDL and high-levels of large VLDL contribute to coronary heart disease risk and are important markers of the Metabolic Syndrome and risk of developing Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus.
The NMR LipoProfile® test may be ordered for individuals with obesity, metabolic syndrome or diabetes, individuals who have had a myocardial infarction or who have a family history of cardiovascular disease and individuals with low HDL and high triglyceride levels.
Patient preparation: patient should be fasting 12 hours prior to collection. The LDL-C and LP-IR Scores will be inaccurate if the patient is not fasting. Water and prescribed medications allowed.
